Why grind the stump?
A stump left in the yard is an eyesore, something to mow around and a tripping hazard for kids and pets. As it rots it can become a home for carpenter ants and other pests. Many species also send up sprouts from the stump for years.
- Removes tripping hazards from your yard
- Prevents pests that thrive in decaying wood
- Makes mowing and landscaping easier
- Stops regrowth that could cause problems later
- Leaves the spot ready for grass, flowers or a new tree
Any stump, ours or somebody else’s
We grind stumps as part of a removal and as a job by themselves. One stump or fifteen, fresh or left over from a tree that came down years ago. Our grinders fit through most gates, and the tracked machine handles the big ones.
Before we grind, underground utilities get located. After we grind, you choose: keep the chips as mulch, or have us haul them away and leave the hole ready for soil.

What does stump grinding cost?
Stumps are priced mostly by diameter at ground level, plus how easy they are to reach. A machine has to get to the stump, so a narrow gate, a slope or a stump tight against a foundation or fence takes longer. Several stumps on one visit cost less per stump than one at a time. Surface roots can be chased and ground too if you want a flat lawn.

What about utilities, roots and the mess?
Buried lines are located before any grinding. Tell us about sprinkler lines, invisible dog fences and landscape lighting, because locators do not mark private lines.
Grinding turns the stump into a pile of chips mixed with soil, usually more than people expect. We can rake it back into the hole, leave it as mulch or haul it away. The roots that run out from the stump are left to rot in the ground unless you ask us to follow them.
“Speedy quote and easy scheduling. Prompt, polite and excellent clean up! Great job on our tree removal.”
Stump grinding or full stump removal?
Grinding is the right answer almost every time. Pulling a whole stump and root ball means heavy equipment, a large hole and a torn up yard. Grinding 4 to 6 inches below the surface is enough for lawn or flower beds. If you plan to pour concrete or plant a new tree in the same spot, tell us and we will grind deeper.

Stump Grinding questions
How deep do you grind the stump?
We typically grind 4 to 6 inches below the ground surface so it will not regrow or cause a hazard.
What happens to the stump grindings?
We can leave the mulch for your garden or remove it, depending on your preference.
Can I plant something where the stump was?
Yes. Once the stump is ground and the area is cleared you can plant grass, flowers or shrubs in the space.
Will you grind a stump another company left?
Yes. You do not need to have had us remove the tree.
How long does stump grinding take?
A typical stump takes well under an hour once the machine is in place. Very large stumps, or stumps with wide surface roots, take longer. Several stumps can usually be done in one visit.
Do I need to be home?
No. As long as we can reach the stump and you have told us what to do with the grindings, we can do the work and send the invoice.
