Is your tree at risk?

Like all living things, trees have a natural lifespan. Storms, disease and age can weaken a tree until it is no longer safe. Maybe you have noticed a lean that was not there last year, dead limbs in the top, or a crack in the trunk and you are not sure what to do about it. Left alone, those warning signs can turn into a tree on the roof.

The usual reasons a tree has to come down:

  • Severe storm damage that left it unstable
  • Disease or infestation beyond treatment
  • Structural weakness that puts a house, driveway or power line at risk
  • Overcrowding, or roots and limbs interfering with a building
  • Making room for new construction or landscaping

Not every tree with a problem needs to be removed. Our arborists are ISA Certified, with the Tree Risk Assessment Qualification, so the estimate starts with an honest look at whether pruning or cabling the tree is the better answer. If it is, we will tell you.

Big trees and tight spots

A lot of what we take down in the Mid-Willamette Valley is tall Douglas fir, cedar and Oregon white oak growing a few feet from a house, a fence or a neighbor’s shop. Those trees do not get dropped in one piece. A climber or the bucket truck takes them apart from the top, and each section is lowered on ropes so nothing lands on your roof or your landscaping.

One customer had us take out a 120 foot fir. Another had a tree lying parallel to the ground over the house and fence. That is normal work for this crew.

Do you need a permit to remove a tree in Salem?

Sometimes. Inside Salem city limits, a significant tree needs a permit before it is removed. The city counts an Oregon white oak 20 inches or more in diameter, and most other trees 30 inches or more, as significant. Street trees and trees near streams have their own rules. Dallas, Monmouth, Independence and Keizer each handle it differently, and most rural Polk County properties need no permit at all.

If the city asks for an arborist’s opinion, we can write the arborist report that goes with the application. Rules change, so check the City of Salem tree regulations or ask us when we come out.

What does tree removal cost in the Salem area?

There is no flat price, because no two trees are the same job. These are the things that move the number, and the arborist will walk you through each one on site:

  • Size. Height and trunk diameter set how much wood has to come down and be handled.
  • What is underneath it. A tree in an open field can be felled in one piece. A tree over a roof, a fence or a service line has to be taken apart and lowered on ropes.
  • Access. Whether the bucket truck and chipper can get close, or everything has to be carried out through a gate.
  • Condition. Dead and decayed trees are less predictable and take more care.
  • What you want left behind. Hauling the wood, leaving it for firewood and grinding the stump each change the bid.

You get the price in writing before any work is scheduled, and the job is done for that price.

“Great team! Efficient work, no wasted time. Cleaned up as they went. Took out a 120 foot fir tree. Professional!”

How does tree removal work with us?

  1. Free consultation and assessment

We visit your property to assess the tree’s condition, talk through your concerns and help you decide whether removal is the best option.

  2. Safe and efficient removal

If removal is necessary, we plan the job and bring the tree down with the right equipment, protecting the buildings and landscaping around it.

  3. Stump grinding and clean-up

We do not leave a mess behind. Brush is chipped, wood is hauled or left for you, and the stump can be ground 4 to 6 inches below ground level so the area is ready for new planting.

Tree Removal questions

How much does tree removal cost?

It depends on the size of the tree, where it is standing and how hard it is to get to. A small tree in an open yard and a 100 foot fir over a roof are very different jobs. The estimate is free, in writing, and there is no obligation.

How do I know if a tree needs to be removed?

Trees that are dead, diseased, leaning or badly damaged by storms are typically at risk. A professional assessment can tell you whether removal is necessary for safety or whether the tree can be saved.

What happens to the tree once it is down?

Your choice. We can haul everything away, leave the wood for firewood, leave the chips as mulch, and grind the stump or leave it.

Can you handle large or hazardous trees?

Yes. We remove large and hazardous trees in tight spaces and difficult locations, using climbers, a bucket truck and rigging to lower the tree in sections.

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes. Oregon Woodsmen Tree Service is licensed, bonded and insured, Oregon CCB #194150. You can look the license up on the Oregon Construction Contractors Board website.
